A man was shot dead Friday night at a public housing complex located in the shadow of the NYPD headquarters in Lower Manhattan, police reported.
Authorities said the shooting happened on the campus of the Gov. Alfred E. Smith Houses at 388 Pearl St., about a block away from One Police Plaza, just before 8:50 p.m. on May 9.
Officers from the 5th Precinct and NYPD PSA 4, in responding to a 911 call about an assault in progress, found the victim, a 35-year-old man, shot once in the chest.
EMS rushed the victim to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. Police have not yet released the victim’s identity, pending family notification.
The motive for the shooting was not immediately known, police sources said Saturday.
So far, no arrests have been made in the ongoing investigation, police said. Cops are looking for a suspect described as a man with a dark complexion and dreadlocks, who wore a red-and-white checkered jacket, and was seen fleeing eastbound toward South Street after the shots were fired.
